Yesterday I was mulling and wondering about the E.coli outbreak in Germany, and it crossed my mind that I had read that Monsanto and other large agri-companies insert bacteria into seeds to prevent this that and the other thing, as well as promote growth, kill insects and weeds. I wondered if they used this particular bacteria. Well they do.
The reason I was wondering about this was that they were apparently stymied as to what the source is. This morning I went to read BBC news like I normally do, and now they are saying it is a new strain of E.coli they haven't seen before (article link), more toxic and deadlier. So I decided to take a look to see if there was anything that I could find about GMO and bacteria.
I found a site Wikihow and it was about how to find out about what you are eating and purchasing and how it has been modified, even gives the bar codes to show that it's GMO.
E.coli is used, I can't believe that something so deadly is inserted into our food source:
Aspartame/AminoSweet - Addictive and dangerous artificial sweetener commonly found in chewing gum and "diet" beverages. A building block of aspartame, the amino acid phenylalanine, is usually manufactured with the aid of genetically modified E. coli bacteria.
So what if at one of these manufacturing plants where the modification takes place, a person was infected with one of these viruses handled the GMO seeds and caused two bacteria to mutate into a new one? It appears that two from the early evidence suggests the bacteria has genes from two distinct groups of E. coli: enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). One nasty bacteria seems to have acquired a toxin from another nasty bacteria which has resulted in an even nastier bug.
I should mention that this bacteria, the harmless strains are part of the normal flora of the gut, and can benefit their hosts by producing vitamin K2, and by preventing the establishment of pathogenic bacteria within the human intestine.
While certainly at this time the outbreak is in Germany, I wonder where the next one would be, you'd think this couldn't be an isolated incident, or is it?
